Exploring the Spatiotemporal Characteristics and Causes of Rear-End Collisions on Urban Roadways

Rear-end collisions are caused by drivers misjudging urgent risks while following vehicles ahead in most cases. However, compared with other accident types, rear-end have higher preventability. This study aims to reveal the prone segments and hours of collisions. First, we extracted 1236 cases from traffic records Harbin 2015 2019. These accidents classified as property damage accidents, injury fatal according collision severity. Second, density analysis GIS was used demonstrate spatial distribution The spots considering severity were visually displayed. We counted hourly seasonal characteristics statistical data. Finally, LightGBM random forest classifier models evaluate substantial factors affecting results potential practical value warning prevention.
